Liam greeted the delivery truck, wondering what could be coming that couldnât go through the regular mail. The gentleman addressed him in Portuguese and asked him if he could sign for a package for the hospital. It was from a medical supply company he was familiar with, out of Shannon. Heâd expected to see the abbessâs name on it, or maybe Seamus. What he saw instead made him grin so wide, he thought his face was going to crack.
He grabbed the dolly from Paoloâs garden shed, loading the large box. Then he wheeled it toward the surgery. As he came in the door, he sighed before he could bite it back. Izzy on her toes, reaching to tighten the new surgical lantern. It had been donated by one of the hospitals competing for her affections. She was in loose, white scrubs. And a sliver of belly was showing, because her arms were raised high. No more than an inch. But thatâs the way it was with her. It didnât take much to crank him up. âYeâve got a delivery.â
She looked past the lamp and crinkled her brow. âI donât think so. I didnât order anything. How do you know itâs for me?â
He smiled and read the label. âDoctor Isolde Collier, MD.â
She groaned. Then she came around the surgical table and snatched the handle of the dolly out of his hand. âIf you laugh, Iâm going to beat the shit out of you.â
âYouâre always threatening to beat me up, Isâ¦â she shot him a look, âsolde.â He said with a mocking grin. She stopped and took a swat at him, not really meaning to hurt him. He grabbed her arm and pulled her forward, until they were nose to nose, her chin raised defiantly.
âNow how does an Italian, slash Welsh, slash German, slash American girl like you end up named after an Irish Princess?â
She narrowed her eyes at him. âMy mother is a big Wagner fan. She was pregnant with me when she saw the Tristan and Isolde opera. I prefer Izzy. End of story.â
Liam said, âIsolde is a pretty name. Too feminine for you? Youâd rather have been named something like Knuckles Malone?â
Her mouth raised up on one corner. Then she extracted herself from him. She went to the package, reading the whole invoice. She was silent, staring at the piece of paper. Quiet so long that Liam came next to her and took the paper. She cleared her throat. âItâs from your mother,â she said softly. âOr rather, a donation from the birthing center where she works.â
âJesus, Izzy. Itâs a new ultrasound machine. How did she know we needed one?â
âShe and I were talking about the lack of supplies, the substandard x-ray machine, the fact that we were using our crappy ultrasound machine to diagnose breast tumors as well as doing pre-natal scans. I mean, it was just general complaining. I didnât expect her toâ¦.â
Liam smiled, âSheâs a midwife, and sheâs had breast cancer. Then thereâs the whole Caitlyn thing.
